Types of Alternative Medicine Treatments

Alternative medicine is anything that does not fall under the umbrella of conventional Western medicine. Unless your primary care physician was trained in alternative medicine also, you would not visit him or her for an alternative medicine treatment. There are many different types of alternative medicine treatments to investigate. Before using any kind of alternative healing practice, consult with a specialist in the field to ensure safety and proper use. For some types of healing you may need to work directly with a practitioner. Acupuncture is one good example of an alternative therapy you cannot do on your own. This practice stimulates areas of the body and brain with strategic placing of extremely thin needles.

Homeopathy is one type of alternative healing. There are homeopathic treatments found in health food stores and even some supermarkets such as Whole Foods Market and Martin's. These treatments come in small bottles and have Latin names. Often what they are used for is listed on the bottle, but you can also find out a great deal about homeopathic treatments on the Internet. The premise behind homeopathic medicine is that extremely diluted components that match the ailment. For example, there is a homeopathic treatment called Nux vomica that as you might think is used for nausea.

Another type of alternative healing is herbalism. Herbal specialists consult with clients on treating specific symptoms with herbal preparations, whether in tea or capsule form. Homeopathic specialists and herbal specialists cannot diagnose conditions or prescribe medicine, but they can recommend courses of treatment based on what they are told by their client. Herbal specialists can make sure there is no interaction between any medicines you are currently taking and any herbs they recommend for you, so make sure to disclose everything you are taking whether prescription or over the counter.

Massage is another one of the most popular alternative medicine treatments. Massage therapists must successfully graduate from an accredited massage school before they can practice in the majority of states. Some types of massage, such as trigger point massage, may help relieve chronic pain by releasing knotted masses of muscle tissue. In the same area of treatment is reflexology, which stimulates different parts on the body by massaging the feet or hands. There are reflexology gloves and socks that illustrate the different points if you want to try this massage on your own.
