A Guide to Alternative Medicine Schools

As the practice of alternative healing becomes more popular and mainstream, so do alternative medicine schools. There are higher learning facilities dedicated to teaching alternative healing in a variety of disciplines. Some of these schools offer distance learning, for students who are unable to attend classes on campus. While not every school has financial aid available, they may offer some kind of payment plan for tuition to make the program easier to afford. While an alternative healing program may not be as much as, say, nursing school, you can still expect to pay average college prices for this type of education.

One method of obtaining alternative medicine education is through some community colleges. For example, Blue Ridge Community College in Virginia is an example of a school that offers on-campus complementary alternative medicine courses, commonly abbreviated CAM. Many community colleges, or 2-yr colleges, may offer different kinds of CAM programs. So this is one way you might want to go, especially since these educational facilities do offer financial aid in the form of grants, loans and scholarships for qualifying students. Usually loans and grants for community college students are available through the U.S. Department of Education among other sources.

Or, you could choose to enroll in a distance learning alternative medicine school. Two fine examples include the Clayton College of Natural Health and The Alternative Medicine College of Canada. These are two of the many distance learning institutions that offer Bachelor's degrees and Master's degrees in alternative medicine. Most coursework will be done at home, on your computer. Sometimes you may be required to attend online class at a certain time through interactive software. And of course, internships and field work is crucial as a part of any well-rounded education. Some locations are better places for alternative healers to practice than others when it comes to attracting clientele.

There are also alternative medicine schools where you attend as a full-time day student. Others allow you to choose either day or night classes. It can take many years to reach the Doctorate level. Not everyone wants to go that far, however some do. You could even combine traditional medicine with alternative medicine. Some of the career choices you may want to explore in alternative healing might include herbology, naturopathy, iridology, aromatherapy and more. Massage is another type of therapy but there are massage schools you would need to attend and successfully graduate from before being licensed to practice massage.
