Varieties of Alternative Depression Medicine
One of the most popular types of alternative medicine is alternative depression medicine. There are millions of people who suffer from depression, and quite a few of them want a treatment that is natural. While traditional treatment through behavioral therapy and pharmaceuticals is popular and effective in many cases, there are other potential ways to treat the problem. First and foremost, it is important to get a medical diagnosis and let your doctor or psychiatrist know you want to use an alternative therapy. If your doctor refuses to condone alternative therapy, you may need to find one who is educated in both East-West medicine or herbalism.
One alternative supplement for depression is an herb called St. John's Wort. The formal name for this plant is Hypericum perforatum. This plant is found in many countries including Europe and the United States to name just two, and sports delicate bright yellow flowers. In Germany, St. John's Wort is actually prescribed as a cost-effective treatment for mild depression for all ages. In Ireland, one must have a prescription before they can acquire St. John's Wort. In the United States, it is readily available most anywhere vitamins and herbal supplements are sold. You can also find tea that contains St. John's Wort with other soothing ingredients.
Another treatment that has recently gained attention for depression is 5-HTP. This natural amino acid is a precursor to serotonin, a feel good chemical in the brain. It is thought that this supplement can help increase low levels of serotonin in depressed individuals. Some people also use 5-HTP for other conditions like fibromyalgia and insomnia. It is also widely available where supplements are sold. There was a controversy some decades ago about this supplement when a tainted batch was sold, but the problem was confined to the one batch and quality control standards have far improved since then.
Often anxiety goes along with depression. There are herbs like passionflower which is thought to soothe anxiety, and Valerian which helps with sleep and may also help anxiety. Many health food stores have blends that contain St. John's Wort, passionflower, Valerian and other beneficial ingredients to help fight depression, anxiety and insomnia. Before taking any kind of alternative depression medicine, consult with your doctor if you are taking any prescription or OTC medications. Herbs can have dangerous side effects when combined with certain medicines.
