The Fundamentals of Acupuncture Alternative Medicine

Acupuncture alternative medicine is one of the oldest types of treatment, utilized in TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine for ages. Over the years it has made its way to the West, where today there are many different acupuncture clinics and practitioners from which you can choose. Some people feel a bit squeamish at the initial idea of being stuck with needles, until they get a look at the needles and try an acupuncture session for the first time. Most people describe the procedure as painless or almost painless with few to no side effects after.

If there are detrimental side effects, they may include slight discomfort or bruising at the treatment site but most people report no side effects. Acupuncture is done by gently inserting filiform needles (which are very thin) into acupuncture points to relieve various problems with the brain or body. For example acupuncture has been used for everything from chronic back pain to depression. Some even swear by it for weight loss and/or smoking cessation. But how does it work? First you must understand the concept of bodily meridians.

Acupuncture points are located on meridians along which qi, or life energy, is said to flow. In Ayurvedic medicine this is known as prana. When the right points are stimulated through insertion of the needles, the positive effects may occur. However this may not be instant and you may require repeated sessions for full efficiency. To this day Western medicine cannot fully explain how acupuncture works or why. Many who doubt its effectiveness point to the placebo effect but others declare this cannot be the case in every successful acupuncture healing.

If you would like to visit an acupuncturist, the first thing you should do is read up on acupuncture alternative medicine. That way, when you go for your first consultation you will have a grasp on the procedure, the lingo, and the basic fundamentals. It's a good idea to consult with an acupuncturist before making an appointment to make sure they have the proper license, credentials, experience and manner that makes you feel at ease. Also the first consultation is a good time to inquire about prices and rates for acupuncture. Some therapists of this type also practice TCM and may recommend herbal preparations or other therapies like meditation or qi gong.
